Do I Need a Heavy Duty Bay Window Curtain Track?
In most homes, a heavy duty curtain track is not usually needed.
Our standard made-to-measure curtain tracks are strong aluminium tracks designed for most domestic curtains, including full-length curtains, blackout-lined curtains and many interlined curtains.
Heavy duty curtain tracks are designed for more specialist situations where additional strength is genuinely required.

Quick Answer
Usually, no
If your curtains are normal domestic curtains, even if they are full length or blackout lined, our standard custom-made curtain tracks are usually the better choice.
Heavy duty does not mean better quality. It simply means the track is designed for a different situation.
We only recommend choosing a heavy duty curtain track when the extra strength is genuinely needed.
Heavy Duty Does Not Mean Better Quality
It is easy to assume that “heavy duty” means “better”. That is not really the case.
Both our standard made-to-measure curtain tracks and our heavy duty curtain tracks are high-quality aluminium tracks designed to last.
The difference is not quality. The difference is choosing the right curtain track for the right situation.
Our standard custom-made curtain tracks are suitable for the vast majority of homes. Heavy duty tracks are intended for unusually large curtains, very heavy fabrics, or more demanding installations.
Why Most Domestic Curtains Do Not Need Heavy Duty
Many customers describe their curtains as heavy because they are full length, blackout lined, thermal lined, interlined, or simply heavier than curtains they have used before.
That does not automatically mean a heavy duty curtain track is needed.
For most domestic windows, our standard made-to-measure curtain tracks provide more than enough strength while giving a neater, more discreet finish.
Why Heavy Duty Is Not Always the Best Choice
Heavy duty curtain tracks use a larger, stronger aluminium profile. That extra strength is useful when it is genuinely needed, but it also comes with a few trade-offs.
Heavy duty tracks have a chunkier appearance and use larger gliders. This means they can look more noticeable once fitted, especially in normal domestic rooms where a neater, more discreet finish is usually preferred.
If the extra strength is not needed, choosing a heavy duty track can sometimes mean ending up with a larger-looking track without gaining any real benefit.
Bay Windows: 10cm Radius vs 20cm Radius
For bay windows, bend radius is one of the most important differences.
Our standard made-to-measure bay window curtain tracks can be shaped to a tighter 10cm bend radius. This helps the track follow many bay window shapes more neatly.
Our heavy duty bay window curtain tracks require a wider 20cm bend radius. This means they may not follow tighter corners or shorter bay sections as closely.
So for many bay windows, the standard custom-made track is not only strong enough, it can also give a better-looking fit.
When Our Standard Made-to-Measure Curtain Tracks Are Usually Best
Our standard custom-made curtain tracks are usually the right choice for:
- Most domestic curtains
- Full-length curtains
- Blackout-lined curtains
- Many interlined curtains
- Most bay windows
- Most straight windows
- Homes where a neat, discreet finish is preferred
This is the option we recommend for the vast majority of customers.
When a Heavy Duty Curtain Track May Be Needed
A heavy duty curtain track may be worth considering if you have:
- Exceptionally large curtains
- Very heavy specialist fabrics
- Unusually wide or tall curtains
- A commercial or high-use setting
- A situation where extra strength is clearly needed
We supply heavy duty curtain tracks because some customers genuinely need them. But for most homes, they are not the best or neatest option.
How Our Tracks Compare to DIY Store Curtain Tracks
If you are comparing our standard made-to-measure curtain tracks with curtain tracks from a DIY store, it is worth knowing they are not the same type of product.
Our tracks are custom made to your sizes, shaped to your window where needed, and supplied as strong aluminium curtain tracks designed as a long-term solution.
So even if you have had problems with a lightweight DIY track in the past, it does not automatically mean you need a heavy duty track from us.
