What Is the Best Curtain Track for a Bay Window?
An honest guide to choosing the right bay window curtain track.
If you’ve started looking for a curtain track for your bay window, you’ve probably already realised it isn’t always as straightforward as buying a standard straight track.
Bay windows come in different shapes, sizes and angles, and not every curtain track sold for bay windows will give you the same result.
This guide is here to talk you through the main options, including the cheaper DIY-style tracks, bendable aluminium tracks, and made-to-measure bay window curtain tracks, so you can decide what is best for your window, your curtains and your budget.
The quick answer
For most bay windows, the best long-term option is a made-to-measure curtain track that is pre-bent to the shape of your bay window before it arrives.
That means you are not trying to bend a straight track yourself, work out the correct angles, cut brackets down, or hope the curtains glide properly once everything is fitted.
But that does not mean every customer needs the same solution. There are cheaper options that can make sense in some situations, especially if you only need a temporary fix or you are working to a very tight budget.
Do I need to bend the track myself?
No — not with our made-to-measure bay window curtain tracks.
Your track arrives already bent to the shape of your bay window, based on the measurements you provide when ordering.
This is one of the most important differences between our tracks and many off-the-shelf bay window track systems.
- No bending the track at home
- No special bending tools needed
- No trying to copy the shape of your bay by eye
- No guessing where the angles or curves should be
Once it arrives, your job is simply to fit the brackets, fix the track in place, and hang your curtains.
The good, the bad and the ugly
There are a few different ways to fit curtains in a bay window. Some are excellent, some are okay for the right situation, and some can become frustrating quite quickly.
The important thing is understanding what you are really getting before you buy.
The good: made-to-measure and pre-bent
This is the cleanest and most reliable option for most bay windows. The track is made to your sizes, shaped before delivery, and supplied ready to fit.
The bad: sounds easy, but depends on fitting skill
Some straight or flexible tracks are sold as easy to bend, but getting a smooth shape in a real bay window is not always as simple as it sounds.
The ugly: poor brackets, poor bends, poor finish
A track can technically work, but still look untidy, feel awkward to use, or leave the curtains catching around bends.
Option 1: Cheap flexible or DIY bendable curtain tracks
These are often the first option people find when searching for a bay window curtain track. They are usually cheaper, widely available, and promoted as easy to bend around bay windows.
For some people, they can be a perfectly reasonable short-term solution.
When they might make sense
- You need a temporary solution
- You are not planning to stay in the house for long
- You have lightweight curtains
- You are happy with a “good enough for now” finish
- You are confident doing DIY adjustments yourself
Where they can fall short
The main problem is that you are often relying on the track being bent correctly during fitting. That can be harder than expected, especially in angled or curved bays.
If the shape is not quite right, the curtains may not glide smoothly. The track may also look slightly uneven once fitted, especially across wider bays or around tighter bends.
These tracks can do a job, but they are usually not the best choice if you want a neat, long-lasting result.
Option 2: Straight aluminium tracks sold for bay windows
Some aluminium curtain tracks are sold as suitable for bay windows because they can be bent by hand or shaped during fitting.
These can be good tracks in the right hands. I’ve fitted many of these types of tracks over the years for trade customers, so I know they can work.
But they are not always the easy DIY option they may appear to be.
The bending still takes skill
Even if a track can be bent, that does not mean it is easy to bend well. Getting clean, even bends takes care and experience.
A bay window track needs to follow the shape of the bay smoothly. If the bends are too sharp, too shallow, or slightly out of position, the curtains may not run as nicely as they should.
The supplied components can be a problem
Another issue with many off-the-shelf tracks is that they are often supplied with a basic number of gliders and brackets.
Unless you buy a track much longer than you actually need, there may not be enough brackets for good support or enough gliders for a full pair of curtains.
That means you may need to buy extra parts separately, which increases the real cost of the track.
Universal brackets are often a compromise
Many tracks are supplied with “universal” brackets. These are designed to work for both wall fixing and ceiling fixing.
In theory, that sounds useful. In practice, it can be a compromise.
When used for ceiling fixing, these brackets can look bulky and awkward compared with a proper ceiling-fix bracket. Some also need cutting down to size, which means you only get one chance to get it right.
Cut too much off, and the track may no longer fit properly.
Option 3: Made-to-measure bay window curtain tracks
A made-to-measure bay window curtain track is designed to remove the difficult parts from the fitting process.
Instead of buying a straight track and trying to make it fit your bay, the track is made to suit your bay from the start.
- The track is made to your measurements (with our easy templates)
- The bends are shaped before delivery
- The track arrives ready to fit
- The correct brackets and gliders are supplied
- The curtains glide more smoothly around the bay
- The finished result usually looks much neater
This is the difference between making something fit and having something made to fit.
Is made-to-measure more expensive?
Yes, a made-to-measure bay window curtain track will usually cost more than a basic off-the-shelf track.
But it is often not as expensive as people expect.
Many customers assume made-to-measure means “very expensive” before they look into it properly. In reality, our prices are often much more reasonable than people imagine, especially when compared with other similar made-to-measure services.
You also need to think about the full value, not just the first price you see.
- Will the cheaper track need extra brackets or gliders?
- Will it take longer to fit?
- Will the curtains glide as smoothly?
- Will it still look good in a few years?
- Will you end up replacing it later?
A cheaper track can be the right choice if you just need something temporary. But if you want a track that works properly, looks right, and lasts for years, made-to-measure is usually much better value in the long run.
When a cheaper curtain track might be the better choice
I would never say everyone needs a made-to-measure bay window curtain track. Sometimes a cheaper option makes more sense.
A lower-cost DIY track may be the better choice if:
- You are working to a very tight budget
- The curtains are only lightweight
- The room is not used very often
- You are selling the house soon
- You only need a short-term solution
- You are comfortable bending, cutting and adjusting the track yourself
In those situations, spending more may not feel worthwhile.
But if this is your main living room, bedroom, dining room, or a bay window you use every day. In those situations, choosing the better option from the start can save a lot of frustration later.
When our made-to-measure tracks are the better option
Our tracks are best suited to people who want the bay window finished properly, without the stress of bending and shaping the track themselves.
They are a particularly good choice if:
- You want your curtains to glide smoothly around the bay
- You want a neat, professional-looking finish
- You are fitting medium or heavy curtains
- You want the track to last for years
- You do not want to bend the track yourself
- You want the correct brackets and gliders supplied with the track
- You want help choosing the right option for your window
We keep the process as simple as possible. You provide the measurements (with our help), we make the track to suit your bay, and it arrives pre-bent and ready to fit.
What about curtain poles for bay windows?
Curtain poles can look lovely in the right room, but they are not always the most practical option for bay windows.
Pole systems often need passing rings, special corner joints, and more visible brackets. They can also be awkward in tighter bays, especially when you want the curtains to pull smoothly around the corners.
If the decorative look of a pole is your main priority, then a pole system may still be worth considering.
But if smooth curtain movement, neat bends and day-to-day practicality matter most, a curtain track is usually the better option for a bay window.
So, what is the best curtain track for your bay window?
If you want the simplest answer, here it is:
The best curtain track for most bay windows is a made-to-measure track that is pre-bent to the shape of your bay before delivery.
It gives you a better fit, smoother curtain movement, a neater finish, and far less guesswork during fitting.
Cheaper tracks can still have their place. But they usually involve more compromise, more fitting skill, and more risk of the finished result not being quite what you hoped for.
