What is a Heavy-Duty Hand-Drawn Bay Window Curtain Track?

A heavy-duty hand-drawn bay window curtain track is a strong aluminium curtain track made specifically for bay windows and operated by hand — no cords or motors involved.

It’s designed to cope with very heavy curtains, while still running smoothly and quietly. Each track is shaped in our workshop to your bay window’s exact measurements before it’s sent out, so it arrives ready to fit. For the best performance with weighty curtains, it’s paired with ball-bearing roller gliders, which make a big difference when opening and closing.

This track is the right choice for very wide and/or very long curtains, especially when you’re using thick fabrics, interlining, or blackout linings. As a general guide, if your curtains are over 250cm long and around 400cm wide or more, this is the track you’ll want.

If your curtains are smaller or lighter than this, you’ll be more than safe choosing our standard corded bay window curtain track, which is designed to handle everyday bay window curtains with ease.

If you’re unsure whether this is the right track for your bay window or your curtains, just get in touch and I’ll happily point you in the right direction.

Introduction

Hi, I’m Lee Stevens from ezecurtains.co.uk, and I want to show you how to fit one of our Slimline hand drawn bay window curtain tracks. It’s really simple. We’ll start with the return brackets on each side of the bay (if your track includes them). If your order doesn’t include returns, you can skip straight to fitting the track within the bay.

Marking and Fitting the Return Brackets

On the side of the bay, mark pencil lines where you want the return bracket to sit. Measure out around 13–15 cm from the wall — 15 cm is ideal. The return on the track itself will be about 20 cm, so make sure to allow that space when measuring.

For the bracket, align it with your ceiling line inside the bay. Draw a line across, then another line 2 cm higher. Present the bracket to that higher line and mark the two screw holes. Drill and plug these holes (plugs and screws are supplied). Then, screw the bracket firmly into place, making sure it’s upright.

Fixing the Track Into the Return Brackets

Fit the track into the return brackets before attempting anything inside the bay. Clip the track into both side brackets, then centre it left-to-right so the gap between the track and the window is even on both sides.

The Slimline track has a lip along the top edge. Hook the track under the front lip of the bracket, then twist it back until you hear it click. Tighten the screw underneath so it doesn’t fall out.

Positioning the Track in the Bay

Hold the track up inside the bay, checking the distance between the track and the window is even on both sides. Once happy, you can commit to fitting the brackets along the bay ceiling.

Securing the Brackets Inside the Bay

Drive screws directly through the brackets into the ceiling. Some will hit timber (solid fixing), while others may only go into plasterboard (we’ll revisit those later). Continue around the bay, fixing all the brackets in place.

Tip: don’t position a bracket too close to the edge of the plasterboard lip — move it back a few centimetres to avoid breaking the plaster as you drive the screw.

Dealing With Weak Fixings

If a bracket only fixes into plasterboard and doesn’t feel secure, take the screw out and slide the bracket aside. Drill a 6 mm hole, insert a wall plug, slide the bracket back, and reinsert the screw. This will give you a strong, reliable fixing.

Adding the Bracket Covers

The Slimline track is shallower than our standard bay track, so we include neat little covers to hide the bracket and screw. These simply slide over the back of the bracket and clip into place for a smart finish.

Summary

To recap:

  • Fit your return brackets first (measure 15 cm out, 2 mm higher).
  • Clip the track into the returns on both sides and centre it.
  • Tighten the screws, then fix the rest of the brackets into the bay ceiling.
  • Reinforce any brackets where needed with the supplied plugs.
  • Clip on the bracket covers for a clean, attractive finish.

With two people, you’ll be surprised how quickly you can get the Slimline wave track fitted and ready to hang curtains. Thanks for watching — I hope this was useful!

What We Mean by “Heavy Curtains”

When we talk about heavy curtains, we mean fabrics and linings that add significant weight, such as:

  • Velvet – luxurious and thick, often lined for extra insulation.
  • Chenille – textured and dense, ideal for blocking light and sound.
  • Brocade – richly woven and often patterned, with a substantial drape.
  • Blackout lining – increases weight while blocking light completely.
  • Bump interlining – a thick cotton layer used between face fabric and lining for insulation and fullness.

A single pair of curtains made from these materials — especially when blackout lining and bump interlining are combined — can weigh several kilograms and place significant strain on a standard track. Our heavy duty hand drawn track is designed to handle this with ease.

How a heavy duty hand drawn bay window curtain track is made to measure

We don’t do “one size fits all.” Each track is made from high-grade aluminium and bent in our workshop to your bay’s exact shape and size. This ensures a perfect fit, smooth movement, and no awkward gaps.

Glider Choices for Smooth Curtain Movement

All tracks come with our standard strong gliders as default. For an even smoother experience, especially with heavier curtains, you can upgrade to:

  • Roller gliders – reduce friction for easier operation.
  • Roller gliders with ball bearings – premium performance for the biggest and heaviest curtains. These glide effortlessly, even on full-length, lined curtains.
Pairing ball bearing roller gliders with curtain draw rods makes it easy to move long curtains without touching the fabric — helping them stay cleaner and last longer.

Who should choose a heavy duty hand drawn bay window curtain track

Whether you have thick lined curtains, thermal drapes, or luxury fabrics like velvet or brocade, this track has the strength and glide quality to make operation easy. This goes double if your curtains are very wide and very long.

Fixing Options

Choose from:

  • Ceiling fix – for a neat, floor-to-ceiling finish.
  • Wall fix – ideal for deep window sills or obstructions.
  • Mixed fix – a combination for tricky bays.
