Why Does the Curtain Track Overlap Matter?

The overlap allows your two curtains to close past each other slightly in the middle rather than simply meeting edge to edge.

Because this creates additional track length for the curtains to cover, the overlap needs to be included when working out the width you give to your curtain maker.

How you measure it depends on the type of overlap fitted to your curtain track.

Option 1 — Two Curtain Tracks Overlapping

With this type of arrangement, the two track sections physically overlap each other in the middle.

Measure the full width of the overlap, as shown by the dotted line in the image.

Then double this overlap measurement and add to the total length of your curtain track.

This gives you the track width including the extra distance created by the centre overlap.

Option 2 — Curtain Track With an Overlap Arm

Some curtain tracks use an overlap arm instead of physically overlapping two sections of track.

Measure the width of the overlap arm, as shown by the dotted line in the image.

Then double the overlap arm measurement. This allows for both the overlap and the underlap created by the arm.

Then add that total to the overall curtain track length.

Why Is This Especially Important With Pinch Pleat Curtains?

Pinch pleat curtains are normally made to a specific finished width based on the track measurement you provide.

Unlike pencil pleat curtains, there is very little adjustment available once the pleats have been sewn into position.

Including the centre overlap in your measurement helps make sure your curtain maker has the correct track width when calculating the finished width of your curtains.

What If My Curtain Track Doesn’t Have an Overlap?

If your two curtains simply meet in the middle and there is no overlapping track section or overlap arm, there is no additional overlap measurement to add.

Simply use the normal end-to-end length of your curtain track.

The Simple Answer

If your curtain track overlaps in the middle, include that additional overlap when working out the track width for your curtain order.

For overlapping track sections, measure the complete overlap and add it to the track length.

For an overlap arm, measure the arm, double that measurement to allow for the overlap and underlap, and add the result to the track length.

That gives your curtain maker the information they need to allow for the centre overlap when making your curtains.
