Curtain Track for a Square Bay Window
Yes, we make made-to-measure curtain tracks for square bay windows.
A square bay is normally a 3 sided bay window with two 90-degree corners. The track itself is quite straightforward — the important decision is where it should be positioned so your curtains hang the way you want them to.

What Is a Square Bay Window?
A square bay window is basically a 3 sided bay with two 90-degree corners.
The centre window sits across the front of the bay, with a side window returning towards the room on each side.
We make the curtain track to match those two corners, so the bends are already in the correct positions and at the right angles before the track reaches you.
The track can normally be either ceiling fitted or wall fitted. Which option is best depends more on how you want your curtains to hang than on the shape of the track itself.
How Will Your Curtains Hang in a Square Bay?
For most square bay windows, the answer comes down to two simple things:
- Do you have decorative coving around the bay?
- How deep is your window sill?
Once you know the answer to those two questions, it becomes much easier to decide where the track should go and whether your curtains should stay within the bay or return outside it.
Five Common Square Bay Window Set-ups
Most square bays fall into one of the following four arrangements.
The diagrams show the bay from above so you can compare the window sill and curtain track position with your own window.
1. Coving and a Deep Window Sill
- wall or ceiling fitting for sill length curtains
- Ceiling fitting in front of coving with returns out of bay for floor length curtains
2. No Coving and a Deep Window Sill
- wall or ceiling fitting for sill length curtain in the bay
- Ceiling fitting for floor length curtains with returns out of bay
3. Coving and a Shallow Window Sill
- wall or ceiling fitting
- Track can stay within the bay
- Or return outside the bay
- Floor length curtains possible with either arrangement
4. No Coving and a Shallow Window Sill
- wall or ceiling fitting
- Track can stay within the bay
- Or return outside the bay
- Floor length curtains possible with either arrangement
5. No Coving and a Recessed Window Sill
- ceiling fitting
- Track can stay within the bay
- Or return outside the bay
- Floor length curtains possible with either arrangement
What If the Bay Ceiling Is Lower Than the Room Ceiling?
Some square bay windows have a ceiling that sits lower than the main room ceiling.
This does not prevent you having the curtain track return outside the bay.
The track can be ceiling fitted within the bay and then supported from the return walls once it passes outside the bay opening.
If the bay ceiling and room ceiling are at the same height, the complete track and its returns can normally be ceiling fitted instead.
Which Track Do We Recommend for a Square Bay Window?
For most standard hand-drawn curtains, we recommend our Regular Bay Track.
It works very well with the two 90-degree bends found in a square bay and can be supplied for either ceiling or wall fitting.
It gives smooth everyday operation, is suitable for most domestic curtain weights and is also our lowest-priced bay track option.
Are There Other Track Options for a Square Bay?
The Regular Bay Track is the option we recommend for most hand-drawn curtains, but other tracks are available where you need something different.
If you would prefer a narrower and more discreet profile, you may wish to consider our Slimline Bay Track .
If you are planning to hang wave curtains, you will need one of our Wave Bay Window Curtain Tracks .
If you would rather open and close your curtains using a control cord, our Corded Bay Window Curtain Track may be the better choice.
Made to Fit Your Individual Square Bay
Even though square bays have the same basic shape, their dimensions can vary considerably.
We manufacture your track to the measurements of your individual bay, with both 90-degree bends formed in the correct positions before it leaves our workshop.
This makes fitting much simpler than trying to measure, cut and form the corners of a DIY bay track yourself.
Our measuring videos guide you through the process and your measurements are checked before manufacturing begins.
Your finished track is covered by our 10-year guarantee. If it does not fit because a measurement was entered incorrectly, we will also remake it free of charge.
Still Not Sure?
If you are unsure which of these four square bay arrangements best matches your window, feel free to ask us a question.
Tell us a little about your bay and, if helpful, add a photo. We will help you work out where your track should go and which option will give you the curtain look you want.
