When Is a Wall Fitted Bay Window Track a Good Choice?

Although we recommend ceiling fitting for most bay windows, there are situations where wall fixing is the better or sometimes the only practical solution.

This is particularly common where deep coving prevents the track being fitted in the correct ceiling position, or where a beam runs across the front of the bay.

A wall fitted track can work extremely well. The important thing is understanding how far the track can project away from the wall and how that relates to the depth of your window sill.

Window Sill Depth Is Important When Wall Fitting

One of the most important things to check before choosing a wall fitted track is the depth of your bay window sill.

If you want floor length curtains, the curtain track normally needs to project far enough away from the wall for the curtains to hang naturally in front of the sill.

If the sill projects further into the room than the available wall brackets, the curtains will be pushed forward by the sill rather than hanging straight down.

How Far Can Our Bay Tracks Project from the Wall?

The maximum wall bracket projection depends on which track you choose.

• Regular Bay Track: maximum wall projection approximately 9cm
• Slimline Bay Track: maximum wall projection approximately 10cm
• Corded Bay Track: maximum wall projection approximately 10cm
• Modern Bay Track: maximum wall projection approximately 10cm

This is why it is useful to measure the depth of your window sill before deciding how long you would like your curtains to be.

Deep Window Sills Are Common in 1930s Bay Windows

A typical 1930s bay window can have a window sill around 20–22cm deep.

This is considerably further than a standard curtain track wall bracket can project.

In this situation, floor length curtains fitted to a wall mounted track will normally be pushed out by the sill.

Curtains finishing around the top of the window sill are therefore often the better option when the track has to be wall fitted.

Shallower Victorian and Edwardian Bay Windows

Some Victorian and Edwardian bay windows have much shallower window sills, often around 5–10cm deep.

Where the sill depth is within the projection available from the wall brackets, it may be possible to position the track far enough forward for floor length curtains to hang naturally in front of the sill.

This means a wall fitted bay track can still give you the full-length curtain look you want without the sill interfering with the curtain drop.

What If There Is a Beam Across the Front of the Bay?

Another common reason for wall fitting is a structural beam running across the front of the bay window.

The underside of the beam sits lower than the ceiling inside the bay. This can prevent a ceiling fitted track from returning neatly out of the bay on both sides.

If you want the curtains to return outside the bay, a wall fitted track positioned below the beam is often the better solution.

This allows the curtain track to follow the bay and then continue onto the wall outside the opening.

Can the Track Still Be Ceiling Fitted Behind the Beam?

Yes, sometimes.

If you only want shorter curtains finishing around the window sill, the track can often be ceiling fitted inside the bay behind the beam.

The curtains then hang entirely within the bay rather than returning outside it.

Which option is best therefore depends not only on the beam, but also on where you want the curtains to hang when they are open and closed.
